NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR A
Last week we spoke of meeting Christ in the Eurcharist, the Bread and Wine that are his Body and Blood.
Today the scriptures invite us to meet the Lord in the one who holds out his hand and calls Peter to have trust in him, and walk towards him. Elijah the prophet is challenged too, and he finds the voice of God in the sound of the gentle breeze, the still small voice of calm.
We need to ask ourselves how we make sure we come close to the Lord, to meet him in the stillness, to trust him at all times.
This week we keep the feast of Mary's Assumption - how she returns to God in glory, body and soul from this earth after her death - she is that example of one who listened to the voice of God, who trusted him against all odds. Let us celebrate her feast well on Friday.
Friday is a Holyday of Obligation to celebrate the Assumption of Mary, body and soul, after her death into heaven. This is her unique privilege as the blessed of all people.
MASS at 10am and 7.30pm
It is a day when by tradition
herbs and flowers are blessed for use by the church. We invite you to bring any plants of herbs or roses which you want to offer and we will bless them. Later we can plant them around the church grounds to celebrate the memory of Mary
.
The Year of Paul
Called by Pope Benedict, continues until 29th June 2009. A prayer book for the year is available on the paper stall and the monthly reflection book on the daily readings. Paul provids so much of the scriptures we hear on Sundays so let us try to get to know him more.
Living the Catholic Life - Overview of August 2008
The month of August is dedicated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary. The entire month falls within the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. This symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. It is used in the offices and Masses of Ordinary Time. The last portion of the liturgical year represents the time of our pilgrimage to heaven during which we hope for reward.
Keeping Holidays Holy
Last week Pope Benedict addressed greetings to people currenly on holiday, expressing the hope that "they may spend days of serentiy and of beneficial physical and spiritual relaxation. However, I do not foget those who are unable to enjoy a period of rest and vacation: I am thinking of the sick in hospital and rest homes, of prisoners, of the elderly, of those who are alone, and of everyone who spends the summer in the heat of the city. To each of them I give assurances of my closeness and a mention in my prayers" Let us remember one another in this month when people are away or pehaps stuck at home too!
